Another Monday means another Press Selection on rhubarb radio.
It was a whole host of new tunes this week – starting with the Spanish House label (NO!..not a Villa) Amoeba.
As promised two weeks ago another look at the label Kindred Spirits, this time we looked at the less heavy tunes coming from artists on the label. Some really nice Beats, Electronica fused with Afro-Beat and Chilled Organic sounds .
Next – completely switching styles – the focus was on the British Wildlife Festival, taking place in Leeds at the end of March. A great line-up of UK underground bands – we played three due to play over that weekend,
..and finally Breakcore and Electronica from the label Cock Rock Disco.

I can definitely say I’m not missing the snow here in the UK one bit – the studio was warm enough this week that I didn’t have to embed myself on the heater the whole time.
Things got started this week with the deep, intricate and heavy beats of Vent, Bran Richards and Mr Bill. Then keeping things electronic we headed over to the label and creative community 56Stuff – 5 tracks showing off some of their talent.
Next a label that ranks in my top label discoveries of last year (or possibly 2008) – Kindred Spirits – 3 tracks from artists pushing the boundaries of electronic music. Hold tight for another look at the this label in 2 weeks time – covering their jazz and hip-hop artists.
Then finally it was over to the blog We Fucking Love Music – playing tracks from artists featured on their site ranging from instrumental hip-hop and mathcore to indie inspired electronic tunes and vice versa.
Heavy Beats:
1) Vent – Shape Without Colour (Hardcore Beats)
2) Bran Richards – Weavil Cakes (Addictech)
3) Mr Bill – Didgeridoo (Qwerty)
For the first Press Selection of 2010 we started out with Experimental House, Techno and Electronic sounds from the German netlabel Broque.de. Then onto Punk/Hardcore/Indie/Experimental tunes from the blog Bliss in Concrete, before hitting on 5 tracks from the compilation International Skweee Vol.2 out on the label Harmonia. Final few tracks this week came from the diverse and eclectic stable of bands and producers - Important Records.
Can’t believe it’s under two weeks to Christmas – so to get in the Xmas mood on Press Selection, I’ve decided that taking the Scrooge approach and ignoring any music with a Christmas reference in it will be my way of contributing to ‘keeping it Xmas’ this year.
So to start the show off this week – we had a Drum n Bass mix of some recently released tracks. Then completely changing styles we covered three instrumental Math-Rock tracks before ploughing through 4 tracks off the ‘an-ten-nae Presents Acid Crunk Vol.2′ compilation out on Muti Music. Then to finish it off we covered 3 tracks of dark sounds found on the blog ‘cowsarejustfood’. Bah! Humbug!
Drum ‘n’ Bass:
1) Sinistarr – Native (Qilin Music)
2) Reanix - To the Middle of Nothing (Kill Inc. Dnb)
3) Vtech – Computers (Kill Inc. Dnb)
4) Mendelayev - Breath (Hospital Records)
Started this week with the beats, breaks and dubstep from Addictech Records, then onto global/world music with tracks selected from the Afrobeat Blog. We had three tracks from the house/techno label Prime Numbers before looking at a selection of tracks from artists from the West Midlands.
On Press Selection this week we covered the German experimental electronic label Raster Noton, looked at the user-driven mp3 site Starfrosch, picked 3 tracks from the US indie-rock label Dead Oceans, and finally finished it up with some glitch-hop and beats. Tracklisting and links below:
Starfrosch
4) Mithra – Tu es le Bateau et Je Suis la Rame (WeirdandWired)
5) Bassrk – Mephisto #Dub Version# (T-FREE)
6) Wheeler – Breeze Blow (Jahtari)
7) Sushi Dread – Bandama ft Sgt Mangodrum (Al Dente)
I’ve been busy over the weekend making it easier to listen to Press Selection.
I know it’s not easy staying up to midnight on a Monday (weekend hangover and all that), and if you’re like me then you probably like to listen music/radio while on the move, so what I’ve done is set up Mixcloud and SoundCloud accounts.
SoundCloud will host the shows that feature me spoiling the music by letting you know the background on what you’re hearing. You can download the show for your mp3 player or if you’ve got an iPhone or Android then you can get the SoundCloud App.
On Mondays show we covered the Scandinavian Skweee label Dodpop playing 4 tracks from their first compilation – Dodpop Vol.1. We looked at label and management company Sargent House playing 3 artists on their roster. This weeks mix featured recent techno releases, and finally we looked at music found on UK-based mp3 zine and blog 20jazzfunkgreats.co.uk. Tracklistings and links below:
Press Selection is on Mondays, 11pm till Midnight on rhubarbradio.com. Every two weeks PS covers 4 different areas of forward thinking, new, underground and experimental music and plays 3 or 4 tracks from each. Simple Enough!!!
On this first blogged show we’re covering recent releases in dubstep and heavy beats - Norwegian hardcore and metal bands, with the online editorial NoMedia. We’ve got the San francisco Bay based label Anticon, playing 3 of their artists producing abstract hip-hop and leftfield beats….and finally, it’s Breathe-comp.com, and their latest compilation featuring ambient and abstract electronica.
